The Delta 17 Touring Kayak does not currently come with a recess for mounting a deck compass.
However, the day hatch is ideally positioned for a deck compass and a second hatch lid can be ordered from Delta for mounting the Brunton 70P marine compass. Cost ~ $80
- With an adjustable hole saw, cut a 2 3/4 inch hole in the center of the hatch lid
- With a semicircular file, gradually increase the diameter of the opening until the brass ring of the cuppola just fits through
- Trace the perimeter of the compass faceplate and cut a 1/16 inch thick rubber gasket with a 2 3/4 inch diameter hole in the center
- Mark the 4 faceplate holes on the day hatch and the rubber gasket and drill with a #40 bit
- Fit a 1/8 x 2 3/4 inch I.D. O-ring between the faceplate and the rubber gasket to create a waterproof seal
- Use 1/2 inch stainless steel (non-magnetic) #4/40 machine bolts with washer, spring washer and nut to secure the faceplate, O-ring, rubber gasket, cuppola and the brass backing plate to the day hatch lid
- Run tap water over the compass and check the underside of the day hatch lid to test for water tightness — tighten as required
- Mark the kayak deck center-line with tape and align the lubber lines
- Similarly, mark the magnetic deviation of your area and rotate the day hatch lid to compensate
